What is Florida Bar board certification? The Florida Bar board certification was created by The Florida Supreme Court in 1982 to “recognize an attorneys’ special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in practice.”

Florida Bar board certified lawyers are evaluated by their peers, and demonstrate expertise and ability in specific practice areas. There are 27 practice areas that allow certification requiring intensive exams, years of experience and case knowledge in the area of specialization.

The Florida Bar states that, “board certification recognizes attorneys’ special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in practice … which helps consumers identify specialists in various areas of law.”

Attorney Jeff Regan, the managing partner of Regan Atwood P.A., is one of a small group of attorneys in the state of Florida, who holds double Florida Bar board certifications in construction law, and in business litigation.

Attorney and partner F. Eugene Atwood, and attorney and partner Chad Walker, are board certified in construction law.

The Board Certification Process

The Florida Bar board certification process is rigorous. All board certifications require that an attorney has practiced for at least five years.

In business litigation board certification, an attorney has to have tried eight business trials, at least one of which was a jury trial before becoming eligible to sit for the board certification exam. Attorneys have to pass a peer review conducted by the Florida bar before being permitted to sit for the exam.

“I’m board certified in construction law and in business litigation and I’ve carried those proudly,” Jeff said. “I’ve done work in a multitude of different areas. A big part of my practice is construction litigation, and business litigation for many years.”

Gene and Jeff became Florida Bar Board Certified in construction law in its inaugural class, August 1, 2005. Then, Jeff sat for the Florida Bar Board certification exam in business litigation in 2008. Chad became board certified in construction litigation in 2010.

Regan Atwood is a 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best Law Firm for its work in Construction Law and in Commercial Litigation. The litigators handle construction law, business litigation, and real estate litigation.
